Born in Russia, the photographer Nina Leen grew up in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, where she achieved acclaim as an animal photographer. She moved to the United States in 1939 where she made amusing and wry observations of her new adopted homeland in photographic series such as “A Teenager Monopolizes the Telephone,” and “The American Male”. Leen joined the staff of Life magazine in 1945 and went on to produce over 40 covers and many spreads for the magazine.
