8 Mile Curtis HansonRated: R Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: 8 Mile is the inspirational story of Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, Jr., whose life revolves around fighting each day with his unstable, alcoholic mother (kim basinger in her worse, yet entertaining performance), taking care of his little sister, and overcoming his greatest fear: stage fright. This movie really loses its plot from the end of the first shelter sequence, and may be the most boring movie ever made, however the last half-hour make up for [weak], sparse action, a plot that has no solid ground, some [weak] performances [...], and mediocre directing all in all. Well done, interesting scenes throughout however, may keep you on your seat, and i do not see why eminem wasn't at least nominated for an oscar. The film won best song "Lose Yourself" 2003, and for any die-hard eminem fan, this movie is surely a winner, anyone else...well... in EM we trust to make it worth watching.

| 4 | The 40-Year-Old Virgin | Judd Apatow | Unrated | 2005 | Mca Home Video | Comedy | |
The 40-Year-Old Virgin Judd ApatowRated: Unrated Date Added: 26 Feb 2006 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on "The Daily Show" and in movies like "Bruce Almighty" and "Anchorman"--leaps into leading man status with "The 40 Year-Old Virgin". There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd ("Clueless", "The Shape of Things") and Jane Lynch ("Best in Show", "A Mighty Wind"), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener ("Lovely & Amazing", "Being John Malkovich"). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. "--Bret Fetzer" |

| 5 | 2001 - A Space Odyssey | Stanley Kubrick | G | 1968 | Warner Studios | Science Fiction | |
2001 - A Space Odyssey Stanley KubrickRated: G Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: No science fiction film has been more successful in portraying mankind's potential space-borne future than "2001: A Space Odyssey". It is still among the most realistic portrayals of how human exploration of the Solar System may unfold. Sadly, that exploration has not kept the pace envisioned by Stanley Kubrick and his collaborator, noted science fiction writer and visionary Arthur C. Clarke. The film is based on Clarke's early short story "The Sentinel", a science fiction literary classic. Those who pay heed to negative comments by previous reviewers will miss a genuine cinematic masterpiece replete with vivid imagery and great special effects. Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood give credible performances as the American astronauts aboard the USS Discovery, though the finest performance is by the actor who is the voice of HAL (HAL 9000, the Discovery's computer.). Incidentally, "Star Trek" fans will remember Gary Lockwood for his portrayal of Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell, the ill fated first officer of the Starship Enterprise and friend of her captain, James T. Kirk, in the series' second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". "2001: A Space Odyssey" broke ground for the great space films that followed, including the "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" series, yet none of these have depicted space travel as realistically as this seminal work of science fiction cinema.
