Salem's Lot Tobe HooperRated: PG Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: Directed by Tobe Hooper (who would go on to helm "Poltergeist"), "Salem's Lot" is a better-than-adequate condensing of Stephen King's classic horror novel. It's made all the more effective when you consider this is material originally shown on network television. David Soul ("Starsky and Hutch") plays Ben Mears, a writer who returns to his hometown to write a novel about the local haunted house, and ends up dating Susan Norton (Bonnie Bedelia, future star of "Heart Like a Wheel"). Then evil James Mason comes to town, and pretty soon 70s character actors like Fred Willard, Geoffery Lewis and Elisha Cook, Jr. are dropping dead due to... mysterious circumstances. Okay, enough phony suspense. It's a vampire movie. Vampires... in modern-day Maine. And it works better than it has a right to. Soul's not exactly tortured enough, and Lance Kerwin's a little too old to play a monster-obsessed youth, but the supporting cast, which includes Ed Flanders ("St. Elsewhere"), Lew Ayres (Paul, from the classic 1930 "All Quiet on the Western Front"), Kenneth McMillan ("Ragtime," and "Dune") and George Dzundza (everything else) more than make up for it. They're sincere, and that counts for a lot. James Mason makes a perfectly urbane villain; he's suave and dangerous, and much smarter than his undead master, who's something of a disappointment in the chills department when finally revealed. This disk contains the entire miniseries, which manages to maintain a level of suitable creepiness, despite some dated sexual innuendo and a some "made-for-tv" scenes that aren't quite as menacing as they could be. Still, a few sequences are effectively chilling, and it's well worth your time, especially around Halloween.

Saturn 3 John Barry (III), Stanley DonenRated: R Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: To say the least, I was expecting far more from this film than what I got. For one thing, the actual concept is interesting and original. A robot going biserk while stationed in a science facility is a great idea to make a suspensful sci/fi epic. But somehow this film doesn't pull it off. The one thing that got to me is how dated this film is. It's not too terribly old; it was released in 1979, but the special effects look like they are out of a 1960's film. Alien came out the same year and this film but this looks like it came out 10 years before it. I also was not big on the acting itself. Harvey Keitel gives a wooden performance, Kurt Douglas is unconvincing as a scientist, and Farrah Faucet just seems be thown in as some Eye Candy. What a shame because I usually like these actors. When the robot finally goes biserk, it's not all that scary and it doesn't last all that long. When its all said and done, this film emerges as a failure, which is a shame because it had so much going for it.

Scanners David CronenbergRated: R Date Added: 27 Nov 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: David Cronenberg's 1981 horror film is a darkly paranoid story of a homeless man (Stephen Lack) mistakenly believed to be insane, when in fact he can't turn off the sound of other people's thoughts in his telepathic mind. Helped by a doctor (Patrick McGoohan) and enlisted in a program of "scanners"--telepaths who also can will heads to explode--he becomes involved in a battle against nefarious forces. A number of critics consider this to be Cronenberg's first great film, and indeed it has a serious vision of destiny that rivals some of the important German expressionist works from the silent cinema. Lack is very good as the odd hero, and McGoohan is effectively eccentric and chilly as the scientist who saves him from the street, only to thrust him into a terrible struggle. "--Tom Keogh" |

The Serpent And The Rainbow Wes CravenRated: R Date Added: 02 Jul 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: Eight years before he scored a phenomenal hit with "Scream", horror master Wes Craven made a worthy effort to "legitimize" horror with this chilling supernatural thriller, based on the best-selling book by Wade Davis. More ambitious than most horror films, this one allowed Craven to generate compelling plausibility with the fact-based story of a Harvard researcher (Bill Pullman) who travels to Haiti to procure a secret voodoo powder that places people into a state of simulated death. His investigation into the hidden world of black magic grows increasingly dangerous until he's caught in a living nightmare--a potentially deadly predicament that inspired the film's advertising tag line: "Don't bury me... I'm not dead!" Craven pays particular attention to authentic details of Haitian society and the role voodoo plays in Haitian culture, and the film gains additional atmosphere from location shooting in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Craven would, of course, continue to thrive by making more "conventional" horror films including "Scream", but this remains a fascinating departure for one of the genre's most celebrated directors. Serpico Sidney Lumet, Laurent BouzereauRated: R Date Added: 15 Apr 2007 Languages: English, French Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Tony Manero (John Travolta) in "Saturday Night Fever" and Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg) in "Boogie Nights" have one major thing in common: They both have posters of Al Pacino as Serpico on their bedroom walls. As the real-life NYPD detective whose integrity cost him virtually everything (and almost cost him his life), Pacino became one of the icons of gritty, realistic 1970s filmmaking. Released in 1973, between the first two "Godfather" movies, this is the true story of Frank Serpico, a long-haired, idealistic, iconoclastic cop who reluctantly goes undercover to investigate dirty colleagues who are on the take. This is one of the definitive Pacino performances, along with his role as Michael Corleone in the "Godfather" saga, and Sonny the bungling bank robber in "Dog Day Afternoon" (which reunited him with his Serpico director, Sidney Lumet)--and Pacino was nominated for a best actor Oscar for all of them (although he wouldn't actually win until 1992's "Scent of a Woman"). The Seven-Ups Philip D'AntoniRated: PG Writer: Sonny Grosso Date Added: 30 Nov 2008 Languages: English Subtitles: English, Spanish Sound: Dolby Digital 1.0 Summary: The Seven-Ups of the title are a hot-dogging special unit of the New York Police Department led by street smart Roy Scheider, who applies unconventional techniques to crack tough cases and nab untouchable criminals. When a pair of police impersonators pulls a series of mob kidnappings, the local hoods get very nervous and Scheider's boys investigate, leading to a squad member's death that turns the case personal. Director Philip D'Antoni previously produced "Bullitt" and "The French Connection" and learned the importance of a good car chase: with craftsmanlike efficiency he delivers a textbook example of the inner-city chase, lacking style but chock full of squealing tires, careening cars, fleeing pedestrians, and dynamite crackups. The New York City street shooting and the ever-present street sounds give the film a solid sense of place, and Scheider applies his usual thoughtful intensity as the vengeful cop, but the rest of the cops are woefully undeveloped. Only Tony LoBianco, as Scheider's childhood buddy turned hustler and street snitch, has any real presence next to Scheider. In the pantheon of '70s cop thrillers, "The Seven-Ups" ranks below the more vigorous and ambiguous classics like "Serpico" and "The French Connection", but excellent stunt work and gritty action raises it above the pack. Shaft's Big Score Gordon ParksRated: Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: Shaft's Big Score is the first sequel to the super-hip 1971 original. When a pal of detective John Shaft is murdered in a bombing (and $250,000 goes missing), New York's coolest private eye finds himself caught in the middle of a power struggle between black and white gangsters over the numbers racket in Queens. Directed by Gordon Parks (who does a brief cameo as a croupier in an illegal casino) and written by Ernest Tidyman (both of whom made the original Shaft), this film lacks the pacing of its progenitor. Roundtree is at his best when he's questioning a woman he's just met about a suspect, while at the same time beguiling her into the sack (ah, those lazy, crazy days of the sexual revolution). The finale--a shootout in a cemetery, followed by a car-boat-helicopter chase through Queens and up the Harlem River--is preposterously drawn out: Shaft, impervious to machine-gun fire, winds up tripping, spraining his ankle and limping while running from the chopper; two shots later, he's sprinting like a halfback. Look for late Muhammad Ali-trainer Drew Bundini Brown as a wisecracking mobster. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Shaun of the Dead Edgar WrightRated: R Date Added: 25 Mar 2005 Languages: Dolby Digital 5.1: Español, Inglés Subtitles: Español, Inglés, Portugués Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a scream in all senses of the word. Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but all unambitious electronics salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) cares about is his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun fights his way across town to rescue Liz, but the petty concerns of life keep getting in the way: When they're trying to use vinyl records to decapitate a pair of zombies, Shaun and Ed bicker about which bands deserve preservation--New Order they keep, but Sade becomes a lethal frisbee. Many zombie movies are comedies by accident, but Shaun of the Dead is deliberately and brilliantly funny, while still delivering a few delicious jolts of fear. | 320 | The Shining | Stanley Kubrick | R | 1980 | Warner Studios | Horror | |
The Shining Stanley KubrickRated: R Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: It's tough to believe that Stanley Kubrick received a Worst Director Razzie nomination for "The Shining." While "The Shining" may not be given the classic status of some of his other films like "Dr. Strangelove" and "2001", it's actually the least polarizing of this highly-praised and atypical filmmaker's work. This atmospheric thriller is sure to creep you out with its pacing, eery editing and cinematography (those tracking shots are highly effective), and Jack Nicholson's powerful performance as Jack Torrance. Horror films often tend to divide audiences into genre fans who follow the gore and those who laugh in the face of so-called scares, insisting their own resiliancy to cheap thrills and lamebrain plotting.Fortunately, "The Shining" doesn't make you take sides, because its chills come from plotting and character study as much as they do from odd sights that will make you jump. It may stray from Stephen King's book and not all of it may make sense, but "The Shining" has so much going for it that you won't mind. It's a gripping and satisfying film experience, and in my opinion, one of the best films of the '80s.This Warner DVD re-release is definitely the version to get. The fullframe presentation comes at the wishes of Kubrick and the video and audio offer significant improvement over the drab initial release. (Unfortunately, the original Mono audio track has been dropped altogether in favor of an effective 5.1 remix. They could have included both with no problem.)In the way of extras, there is an engaging half-hour on-set documentary, filmed by Kubrick's daughter Vivian. It provides a candid experience of the film's creation, and interviews with some of the actors. In addition, this DVD re-release includes an audio commentary on the documentary (sort of a "making-of the making-of") by Vivian Kubrick. There's also the spooky trailer, which shows how a movie preview can perfectly pique one's interest in a film, without spoiling (or even saying) much.

Shrek 2 Conrad Vernon, Andrew Adamson, Kelly AsburyRated: PG Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: Fiona and Shrek are blissful ogres on their honeymoon in "Shrek 2," the delightful new animated film from Dreamworks. Shrek would like nothing better than to wallow in the swamp and lie on the beach with the love of his life. The couple's solitude is disturbed, however, when the fast-talking and impudent donkey who was Shrek's sidekick in the first movie knocks on their door and makes himself at home. Donkey is too clueless to know that two's company and three's a crowd. Shrek is even more chagrined when Princess Fiona's parents, the King and Queen, invite their daughter and her new husband to the palace. Shrek correctly predicts that his in-laws will be shocked when they discover that their daughter married an ogre. In fact, the King desperately wants Fiona to dump Shrek and marry Prince Charming, a fey blond egomaniac who is overly attached to his pushy mother. All this conflict puts a strain on the newlyweds."Shrek 2" scores in all areas. The acting is marvelous, with Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz heading an all-star cast. Jennifer Saunders is a standout as an aggressive fairy godmother with a mean streak. The animation is terrific, the special effects are marvelous, and there are musical numbers, satirical allusions, and lots of sight gags to entertain kids and adults alike. Kick back and enjoy this perfect summer movie.

The Silence of the Lambs Jonathan DemmeRated: R Date Added: 29 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: Anthony Hopkins' character Hannibal Lecter will go down in history as one of the most memorable and one of the most creepy characters in film history. His performance chills you to the bone yet you can't help but laugh at some of the things he says. The movie is also fantastic. Instead of just being a straight forward serial killer thriller the movie became a classic with it's intense psychological aspect between the detectice Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, and Dr. Lecter. The directing is very straight forward, sometimes almost documentary style and never gets in the way of the movie. With a story this strong flashy camera effects would've only distracted. With solid directing, great acting, and a good story this film is worthy of being called a modern classic. As for the DVD it contains some great extra features. The Commentary is great although the person who introduces the actors everytime they speak is a bit annoying. There are also some interesting deleted scenes and the quotes from serial killers will chill you to the bone. If you can get your hands on a copy of this now out of print DVD grab it and buy it as fast as you can.

Silent Running Douglas TrumbullRated: G Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: After creating many of the innovative special effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Douglas Trumbull tried his hand at directing, and 1971's Silent Running marked an impressive debut. (In addition to creating the visual effects for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and directing 1983's Brainstorm, Trumbull later turned to the creation of high-tech cinematic amusement park rides.) One of the best science fiction films of the 1970s, Silent Running stars Bruce Dern as Freeman Lowell, a nature-loving crewmember aboard the Valley Forge, a gigantic spaceship in a small fleet that carries the last surviving forests of the Earth, which has fallen victim to overpopulation and ecological neglect. Freeman's name reflects his nonconformist philosophy, which runs counter to the prevailing recklessness of his three ill-fated crewmates, who are eager to jettison their precious payload and return to the bleakness of Earth. Before they can sabotage the forests, Freeman does what he must, and spends the remainder of his mission with three robotic "drones" as his only companions, struggling to maintain his sanity in the vastness of space. Dern is superb in this memorable role, representing the lost soul of humankind as well as the back-to-nature youth movement of the 1960s and the pre-Watergate era. (Appropriately, Joan Baez sings the film's theme song.) A rare science fiction film that combines bold adventure with passionate social conscience, Silent Running will remain relevant as long as the Earth is threatened by the ravages of human carelessness. --Jeff Shannon

Sly & Robbie - Superthruster Antonio UrrutiaRated: NR Date Added: 31 Jan 2005 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: 1.85:1 Summary: I first encountered this music video as an extra on one of mp3.com's freebie MP3 CDs. Entranced, I went ahead and ordered the DVD just so I could have a higher quality version of the disc. The main video, Superthruster, isn't bad at all, with some very slick animation telling a story of an Aeon-flux-like operative stealing something (a "superthruster?") from some corporate facility, then being chased through ventilation tunnels by two security cops who bear a striking resemblance to Sly and Robbie themselves. I wish I knew who animated and directed this video, and what other work they had done. The other video, Zen Concrete, is probably the first professionally-done anime music video I've ever seen. (No, wait, scratch that: the second, I was forgetting about Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend".) Nothing really mysterious about it; Sly & Robbie's record label and Manga Video are owned by the same parent company; it's not surprising they could use this footage. I think the song Zen Concrete really does fit Ghost In The Shell quite well. The third "video" isn't really much of one...it's a remix of the Superthruster song with a few pictures of someone's face and staticky images from the main video. In the end, a decent enough little disc for the price.

Soylent Green Richard FleischerRated: PG Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: This "futuristic" movie is a dead giveaway period piece of 1970's culture and sets. The sets look like the back of 3M game packages from the 60's-70's (Remember Twixt, Feudal, Acquire?)and the girls all have hair that betray the era it was made. Originally a novel and made on a relatively small budget. Nonetheless, it is an interesting study of what would be left of us in the event of energy and food shortages with pollution and the destruction of nature. The best aspect of this movie is Heston's role as a COP. It is like a trip back to the old days when they had an expression for the job as "five thousand a year and all you can steal". Opportunity knocks when Heston handles a rich man's murder and discovers luxury like you don't see in 2022. He celebrates his new found treasure which includes a girl, soap, beef and a bottle of bourbon. With the aid of his "book", admirably played by Edward G. Robinson as a former professor now working as a type of librarian police clerk, he discovers that the murder had serious implications on the human condition and eventual destiny of the human race. The knowledge of this horror results in Robinson ending his life by Socratic suicide and Heston dodging assassination attempts by agents hired by Soylent to protect their secret. Heston requires proof of Soylent's scandal and rides the bull to the conclusion which asserts that we are all "Morlock Stew" (with apologies to Mr. Wells). An interesting work, worth a view and the DVD transfer cleans the movie up a bit in a nice widescreen presentation. There are also good additional features which include a party for Robinson acknowledging his 101st picture (also his last..he died shortly afterward) and a section on the making of Soylent Green and the trailer (always interesting because most have nothing to do with the plot that you see on screen) Check it out and spread the word... Soylent Green is...(Gulp!)

Space: 1999 - Series 1Rated: Date Added: 30 Jan 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Comments: Box Set Summary: This series boasted a single memorable episode. A one eyed shrieking monster with waving tentacles versus a two eyed squaking Italian with waving arms and you're hard pressed deciding which one to avoid first. Even this episode has you scratching your head. After having encountered so many strange alien life forms by this point in the proceedings, not many of them over-friendly; why should the Alphans still be sceptical about Cellini's story? The rest suffered the handicap of covering ground already boldly gone by the starship Enterprise and was just plain bad in execution. Take a random episode like 'End Of Eternity'. Could of been a terrifying and tense little thriller with a spider like sadist stalking prey in the exposed and anti-septic confines of a moonbase. Instead, they mis-cast the actor, give him a dodgy haircut and ridiculous pantaloons, campy dialogue and petulant little smacks. The result is yet another dire episode.Actor Landau is a walking liability. According to his own script notes, he felt his character was written as a 'shmuck', which couldn't have helped what actors call their 'moduvashun'.I bought it. Which is why I wish to remain anonymous.

Spaced : Definitive Collector's EditionRated: Date Added: 01 Apr 2005 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Summary: "Spaced" is a sitcom like no other. The premise is simple enough: Daisy (Jessica Stevenson) and Tim (Simon Pegg) are out of luck and love, so pretend to be a couple in order to rent a flat together. Downstairs neighbour and eccentric painter Brian suspects someone's fibbing, and almost blows their cover with their lecherous lush of a landlady, Marsha. Fortunately he soon falls for Daisy's health-freak friend Twist, while Daisy herself goes ga-ga for pet dog Colin. Tim remains happily platonic with lifemate Mike; a sweet-at-heart guns 'n' ammo obsessive. The series is chock-full of pop culture references. In fact, each episode is themed after at least one movie, with nods to "The Shining" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" proving especially hilarious. Hardly five minutes goes by without a "Star Wars" reference, and every second of screen time from Bill Bailey as owner of the comic shop where Tim works is comedic gold. The look of the series is its other outstanding element, with slam-zooms, dizzying montages, and inspired lighting effects (often paying homage to the "Evil Dead" movies). It's an affectionate fantasy on the life of the twenty-something that's uncomfortably close to the truth.
