Summary: I prefer cookbooks with pictures of the food so that I have a better idea of what I am actually making. This cookbook has lots of beautiful pictures, the recipes are easy to follow, and they also give a timeframe for preparation and cooking so you don't wind out starting something a little more difficult on a weeknight. I followed most of the recipes exactly, with a few exceptions. Since my husband is allergic to fish, I do not use fish oil and I substitute chicken for fish in some cases. I also do not have a mortor and pestle so I cheat and use a spice grinder. Still, the recipes came out just delicious, and I love the different regional dishes available. This book gives excellent examples from many different asian regions. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Summary: This book is very close to my heart. It's about no-nonsense, simple cooking with great flavours all year round. When I began writing it, I didn't really know what recipes I would come up with, but something began to inspire me very quickly... my vegetable patch! I came to realise last year that it's not always about looking out at the wider world for inspiration. Being at home, feeling relaxed and open, can also offer this. I love to spend time at home in the village where I grew up, working with the boss, Mother Nature, in my garden and seeing all my beautiful veggies coming out of the ground. Inside, you'll find over 100 new recipes, plus some basic planting information and tips if you fancy having a go at getting your hands dirty as well! The fabulous new cookbook from the international bestseller ties in with his new Channel 4 series about no-nonsense, simple cooking inspired by growing your own vegetables.

Summary: Japanese food was virtually unknown in many Western cities in the 1980s, when Shizuo Tsujii wrote "Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art". M.F.K. Fisher's introduction eloquently sets the stage for Tsujii's classic work. It may be the most thought-provoking piece ever written about Japanese food for non-Asians, pointing out how food and even the physical act of eating differ from what they are in Japan. Tsujii's writing is clear and educational. He talks specifically to a Western, non-Asian audience, demonstrating far more awareness of our culinary preferences and prejudices than most Westerners have for his. Following the preface (which should not be skipped), an arrangement of color photos of key ingredients and dishes sets the scene. Next, part 1 provides a thorough explanation of techniques for Japanese cooking and instructions for making all the basic elements of dishes. These "lessons" cover cutting vegetables, steaming, grilling, and deep frying the Japanese way, and even how to make sushi. Recipes cover Basic Vinegar Salad Dressings, Sushi Rice, and Teriyaki. To prepare Vinegared Octopus, a complete series of drawings clearly demonstrates each step. Part 2 consists solely of recipes. Gather together fresh ginger, soy sauce, the sweet wine "mirin ", sake, and rice vinegar and you can make many of them. Beginners might start with Deep Fried Chicken Patties, Steak Teriyaki, Tortoise Shell Tofu, simply bathed in a tasty sauce, and Asparagus Rice, a light and colorful dish. Because of its combination of background information, comprehensive recipes, and excellent instructions, "Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art " will always remain an important book for learning about this simple yet complex cuisine. Summary: 'This is real cooking. The roast potato that sticks to the roasting tin; the crouton from the salad that has soaked up the mustardy dressing...these are the things that make something worth eating. And worth cooking' - Nigel Slater. Nigel Slater's sumptuous recipes are not about making fancy stocks and sauces or perfecting spun-sugar baskets. They are about using the best quality ingredients to make food that is a joy to eat. Freshness, simplicity and flavour: these are what count in the easy-to-follow and deliciously satisfying meals contained in "Real Cooking".

Summary: Portraying New York City circa 1897 as a time bomb of political corruption and violence, Caleb Carr returns to familiar territory in "The Angel of Darkness", the sequel to his international bestseller, "The Alienist". Also a stand-alone novel, "The Angel of Darkness" brings together the same cast of characters from "The Alienist" but the relating of their recent psychological investigation has shifted from John Moore to 13-year-old Stevie Taggert. Abandoned by his drug addict mother, raised on the streets and in love with a teenage prostitute, Stevie's narration brings to the novel a tender combination of streetwise nonchalance and a tentative optimism that has been fostered by Dr Laszlo Kriezler's care. But even Stevie isn't prepared for the case of Libby Hatch--a dangerous caretaker who leaves in her wake a trail of dead children and who has kidnapped the child of a Spanish diplomat. Racing against the clock of Libby's psychosis and a legal system that has blinkered itself to such atrocities, the group struggle to find the key that will reveal Libby's murderous nature. A fascinating exploration of the very modern theme of motherhood and its role in society, "The Angel of Darkness" is a taut, page-turning thriller set against a gloomy Dickensian backdrop of crime and depravation. --"Shannon Bingham"
